On Android there are a lot of things that we like to do with our devices and one of the biggest, is customization. There’s no other mobile platform that can offer the sort of flexibility of customization as Android. We can change launchers, change default apps, our icons – pretty much whatever we want. When it comes to looks though, it all hinges on a great wallpaper. Without that great wallpaper your homescreen is never complete. Read on to see if Flipper can help you find the HD wallpaper you’re looking for.

Description: Flipper HD is a new application that aims to bring you not only a vast selection of wallpapers but, the best wallpapers. There are over 1,000,000 HD Wallpapers to choose from and with the help of homescreen widgets you can choose something that catches your eye right away. Flipper allows you to save as many wallpapers to your phone or tablet as you like, giving you the choice to set them right away or when you feel the time is right. You vote for wallpapers you like by sharing them over Twitter, the more shares a wallpaper has, the better rated it becomes. To find out more about the app you can take a look at the Flipper Website.

How it Works: To start customizing your homescreen with wallpapers from the Flipper HD app, you’ll have to head over to the Play Store and install the app from there. Once you have done, you’ll notice that the first time you launch the app, you’ll be greeted with the random page, which gives a selection of random wallpapers that are different every time you launch the app:

Then there is also the Top Rated section:

And my personal favorite part of the app, the search section. It’s an accurate search and you’d be surprised just what wallpapers there are in Flipper’s library. I’m a big gamer and I’ve been playing a lot of Bioshock Infinite, so let’s search for that and see what we get:

As you can see there’s a lot of wallpapers that have come up in the search and once I pick one that I like, I can see the image at a larger resolution and then choose what to do with it:

As you can see, there are three options at the top of the app, I can save, share or set the image as a wallpaper. Setting the wallpaper is a s simple as pressing a button. Once you’ve done that, your homescreen has a new wallpaper:

If you don’t have anything specific in mind, and you just want to take a look at a specific type of wallpaper, then you’ll love the categories that have been recently added to the app. There’s wide variety to choose from, so for me, I’d like to look for some more game wallpapers:

Clicking the “Video Games” option will take me straight to wallpapers that fit that choice. There’s a lot of categories – as you can see above – so there’s something for everyone here:

If you take a look in the settings part of the app, you’ll see that there’s a lot of tweaks to help with the experience of the app:

It’s in the settings screen that you’ll find the option to upgrade to get rid of the ads. There’s also a screensaver side to the app as well, which will show random wallpapers for an interval of your choosing one after the other:

If you see an image you like, just tap the screen to set it as your wallpaper or share it with friends:

Sharing is a big part of the app and it relies on Twitter in order to continually rate the wallpapers inside the app. You have to authorize the app to use your Twitter account and whenever you hit the little “T” at the bottom of a wallpaper or a thumbnail then a tweet is sent out from your account:

It’s not a shouty Tweet or anything like that and these shares go a long way to add up to ratings of wallpapers for them to hit the “Top Rated” part of the app. Twitter, isn’t the only option with which to share though, fans of Google+ will be happy to hear that you can share through Android’s excellent “Share” menu, like this:

Above is how you compose your share, maybe add some text and then below you’ll get something like this:

Click on the link will take you to the Flipper website where your friends can take a look at the wallpaper you’ve chosen:

Opinion: As I’m sure many of you are, I’m always looking for something new to make my homescreen really “pop”, and with most of us now having two devices, choosing wallpapers for them has gotten even harder. Thanks to Flipper I have a massive selection of high quality photos to suit whatever look I’m going for. Sharing wallpapers to Twitter is a real nice touch and the fact that it counts towards ratings is genius. Looking through the selection of wallpapers on offer I can see that there’s something for everyone: cars, soccer teams, comic book heroes, vistas, animals, wildlife – it’s all here.

Ratings

  • Speed (4/5) – The app is fast and runs well, works great on the Nexus 7 as well!
  • Features (5/5) – Flipper is one of the best wallpaper apps I have used and the vast selection of wallpapers is very pleasing, you’ll be surprised at just how much is on offer.
  • Theme (4/5) – When it comes to the app’s theme it’s based around the Holo theme from Android 4.0 and it really lets the wallpapers take center stage, however the ads are a little unpleasant.
  • Overall (4.5/5) – If you’re the type of person to change your wallpaper a lot then you need to be armed with a serious tool – Flipper HD can help and you won’t regret giving the app a go.

Pros

  • Massive selection of wallpapers – over 1 Million – there’s definitely something for everyone.
  • Good looking theme helps to show off the variety of stunning wallpapers.
  • Flipper’s widgets are something new for a wallpaper app and work well.
  • Using social media to affect the ratings of a particular wallpaper is a great idea.

Cons

  • Wallpaper thumbnails don’t do them justice on the Nexus 7.
  • Being able to fit wallpapers to the display – like the Gallery app would be useful for some people.

Conclusion: We’ve seen a lot of Wallpaper apps hit the Play Store over years but, none of them can stand up to Flipper’s excellent selection. From the quality selection of wallpapers to the social element, there’s a lot on offer here. If you’re one that feels the need to change your homescreen up quite often then Flipper is perfect for you and it’s great to see developers taking advantage of this aspect of Android. We’ve been customizing our devices for years and Flipper HD is one of the best tools to help you get the look you’re looking for.
